Niguse Hagazi is an Ethiopian researcher and the Ethiopian Country Director/representative for CIFOR-ICRAF. With over 15 years of experience in national and international research, Niguse has made significant contributions to the fields of forestry, landscape restoration, agroforestry, natural resource management, and climate change. His work has been instrumental in supporting the Ethiopian government in developing key strategies, including the Ethiopian National Drylands Restoration Strategy. Niguse Hagazi is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Geography, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany. He holds an MSc in Tropical Land Resources Management, which he earned in 2008 from Mekelle University in Ethiopia. His academic journey began with a BSc in Forestry Sciences from Wendo-Genet College of Forestry, part of Hawassa University, Ethiopia, which he completed in 2002. Niguse’s educational background reflects a strong focus on environmental and land resource management, laying a solid foundation for his current research endeavors in geography.

Niguse Hagazi is the Ethiopian Country Director and a researcher at the CIFOR-ICRAF Ethiopia Office, a position he has held since May 2017. His role involves overseeing research initiatives and leading efforts to improve sustainable land management practices. Prior to this, he worked as a consultant for the World Agroforestry Centre at the Ethiopia Office from April 2014 to 2017, where he contributed to various agroforestry projects. Niguse’s extensive research career also includes a decade-long tenure as a researcher at the Tigray Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) from June 2003 to March 2013, where he focused on agricultural innovation and resource management in Ethiopia.
