Hempstead, NY – Eight members of the Hofstra wrestling team were named recipients of Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Academic Achievement Awards for the 2021-22 season, the conference announced today.

Justin Hoyle, Zachary Knighton-Ward, Michael Leandrou, Ross McFarland, Joe McGinty, Trey Rogers, Ricky Stamm, and Matthew Templeton were honored by the EIWA for their academic and athletic accomplishments during the 2021-22 season of Hofstra wrestling.

The EIWA Academic Achievement Awards are presented to conference wrestlers who have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2 and have competed in the EIWA Championships, or achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and qualified for the NCAA Championships through the EIWA Championships. All eight Hofstra honorees achieved cumulative GPAs of 3.2 or higher and competed at the EIWA Championships.

A sophomore from Maple Valley, Washington, Hoyle finished eighth at the EIWA Championships at the 141 lb. weight class, and won 10 matches this past season. He holds a cumulative GPA of 3.40 as a supply chain management major, and this will be Hoyle’s third EIWA Academic Achievement Award.

A redshirt senior from Uniondale, New York, Knighton-Ward was an at-large qualifier for the 2022 NCAA Championships after placing sixth at 285 lbs. at the EIWA Championships. A winner of 18 matches in 2021-22, Knighton-Ward possesses a 3.56 cumulative GPA as a criminology major. This will be Knighton-Ward’s second EIWA Academic Achievement Award.

Leandrou holds a 3.32 cumulative GPA while majoring in exercise science. The Oyster Bay, New York-native won eight matches as the starter at 149 lbs.

McFarland, a native of Pennellville, New York, won two matches in 2021-22 at 174 lbs. He holds a cumulative GPA of 3.23 as a physical education major.

Hailing from Monroe, New York, McGinty was Hofstra’s starter at 157 lbs. and won nine matches this past season. An EIWA Academic Award recipient last season, McGinty holds a 3.81 cumulative GPA with a major in health science.

A junior from Hastings, Minnesota, Rogers won 16 matches as the starter at 197 lbs. This is the fourth EIWA Academic Achievement Award for Rogers, who holds a 3.93 cumulative GPA as a pre-medical studies major.

Stamm, a redshirt senior from Levittown, New York, won 13 matches as the Hofstra starter at 165 lbs. A recipient of an EIWA Academic Achievement Award in 2020-21, Stamm earned a 3.2 GPA as a social studies education major.

A redshirt sophomore from Libertyville, Illinois, Templeton scored an upset victory in the wrestleback bracket of the 2022 EIWA Championships. He holds a 3.89 cumulative GPA as a finance major.

105 student-athletes across the 17 member institutions that competed in the 2021-22 season earned EIWA Academic Achievement Awards.
