Assoc Prof DrHanne Bækgaard Larsen : Communication and technology

Ass. Prof Hanne Bækgaard Larsen is an Associate Professor at the University of Copenhagen, Institute of Clinical Medicine, and a pioneering leader in pediatric oncology psychosocial research at the University Hospital of Copenhagen (Rigshospitalet). She spearheads the largest pediatric oncology psychosocial research group in Denmark and is a key contributor to the management of the leading Childhood Cancer Research group in the Nordic Countries (Børneonkologisk Laboratorium). With a team of approximately 130, including 70 researchers, Ass. Prof Larsen plays a crucial role in the national childhood oncology research cooperation CONTROL. Assoc Prof Dr Hanne Bækgaard Larsen is a distinguished figure with a diverse academic background. Commencing her journey as a Registered Nurse at Rigshospitalet in 1992, she continued to expand her expertise. In 1996, she delved into nursing science at Danmarks Sygeplejerske Højskole, Copenhagen. Subsequently, in 2004, she earned a Master’s in Social Science in Sociology (cand.scient.soc) from the University of Copenhagen. Her academic pursuits culminated in a Ph.D. from the Faculty of Health Science at the University of Copenhagen in 2011. Her groundbreaking thesis, “The effects of a Controlled Family Navigator Nurse Directed Intervention Program for Parents Hospitalized with Children Undergoing Allogeneic Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT),” reflects her commitment to innovative healthcare solutions.

Employment: 

From 1992 to 2004, Assoc Prof Dr Hanne Bækgaard Larsen served as a Registered Nurse at the University Hospital of Copenhagen in the unit for Allogeneic and Autologous Bone Marrow Transplantation (4043/44). Her responsibilities included roles as a nurse in the transplant unit, head of the outpatient clinic, and leading the educational program for advanced nurses in hematology and bone marrow transplantation. Over the years, she diversified her roles, working as an Educational Consultant for the Finsen-Center, Datamanager at the Database for Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation, and heading educational programs. In 2007, she embarked on her Ph.D. journey, and since 2011, she has been contributing significantly as a Project Coordinator and Postdoctoral Researcher in various capacities. Her journey has evolved to her current role as Associate Professor at the University of Copenhagen, where she serves as the Research Coordinator of nursing and psychosocial research at the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, Juliane Marie Centre, University Hospital Copenhagen, Rigshospitalet. 🌐🏥

Assoc Prof Dr Hanne Bækgaard Larsen’s research focus revolves around enhancing the well-being and quality of life for children and families affected by pediatric and adolescent cancer. Utilizing cost-effective interventions, novel technologies, and discovery research, she aims to identify at-risk and underserviced groups. Her work includes translational efforts to instigate positive changes in clinical practice. Notably, she has contributed significantly to understanding the challenges faced by young cancer survivors during their return to education and work. Additionally, her research delves into improving the diagnostic pathway for childhood cancer, intersectoral collaboration in home-based pediatric cancer care, and exploring innovative educational approaches, such as telepresence-mediated learning for children undergoing cancer treatment.
